Allusions in Poetry

Introduction

What is an allusion?

An allusion is an indirect reference to any person, place, or thing-fictitious, historical, or actual (Kennedy & Gioia 707). The poet will use allusions automatically assuming you know what he/ she is talking about. The poet also uses allusions to save space. The poet also uses this literary form to enrich the meaning of the poem. Some allusions are also quotations from other poems. T.S. Eliot uses allusions in this poem to make the poem more loveable and makes the reader read beyond the lines, beyond the horizon.
